The Problem

A twin-tower residential scheme in central Manchester needed floor-by-floor screening across 26 floors as the concrete frame progressed, with work following a rolling programme of roughly a week per floor, weather dependent, rather than a single fixed scope. As with any multi-storey frame exposed floor by floor, the screening needed to meet a fire-retardant standard suitable for a live, occupied city-centre site.

The specification added a second requirement beyond weather and fire protection: a defined number of floors needed to carry the development's own branding, visible on the building elevation as the tower rose. This meant the printed film had to be manufactured and installed to the same fire-retardant standard as the functional screening elsewhere on site.

The Solution

Rhino Shrink Wrap specified 280 micron fire-retardant film for the standard screening across all 26 floors, and 300 micron fire-retardant film, custom printed with the client's branding, for 7 of those floors. The heavier gauge on the branded sections reflected the larger format print and the need for the graphics to hold their finish across the screen.

Fixing responsibility was split by trade. The primary batten frame was supplied and fixed by the client's own team, using concrete fixings at 300mm centres, with additional timber batten free-issued for the trapping fix that secures the film itself. Rhino's batten scope covered this trapping fix, totalling 326.8 linear metres per floor.

Branded panels were manufactured to a fixed maximum print height of 2.5 metres and positioned centrally across each elevation, with the printed section on the first wrapped floor kept white to establish a clean baseline before the branding began on the floors above. Shrink wrap was run continuously around the building line, including where it passed outside concrete columns, with the seams at those points taped to prevent water ingress.

The Result

Across the 26 floors, approximately 11,789m² of fire-retardant film was specified for the project. The majority used standard 280 micron film, while 7 floors carried custom-printed 300 micron branded film to the same fire-retardant standard.

The result was a screening solution that did double duty: protecting the frame through a multi-month, floor-by-floor build programme, while giving the development a consistent branded presence on the Manchester skyline as it rose.
