Video: Watch the installation — shrink wrapping CAF Rail train cab fronts at Stockport
Key Facts
- Client: CAF Rail UK Ltd
- Scope: 8 units — 4 full, 2 half, 2 quarter train cab fronts
- Location: Stockport, SK3 0EF
- Material: 250 micron industrial shrink wrap
- Total area: approx. 272m²
- Duration: 1 day
The Problem
Train cab fronts the aerodynamic nose cones that form the leading face of a passenger rail vehicle are large, expensive, geometrically complex components. They're typically moulded from composite materials, finished to a high standard, and vulnerable to damage from UV exposure, moisture, contamination, and impact during storage or transport.
CAF Rail UK, the UK arm of Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF, required a batch of eight cab front units to be protected at their Stockport facility. The units varied in size full, half, and quarter fronts and the requirement was to wrap and shrink all eight in a single day's work.
The geometry is the challenge. A flat pallet of steel plate and a compound-curved nose cone are very different wrapping propositions. The curved surfaces, protruding features, and varying profiles across the unit range meant the wrap had to be applied with care to achieve complete coverage without stress points, gaps, or surface contact issues on finished composite faces.

The Solution
Rhino Shrink Wrap attended the CAF Rail facility in Stockport and wrapped all eight units in one visit using 250 micron industrial shrink wrap film.
The specification 250 micron rather than the 300 micron used for scaffold encapsulation was appropriate for this application: lighter, more conformable over compound curves, and sufficient for the protection and containment required in a controlled industrial storage and logistics context.
Each unit was wrapped on its pallet, with the film applied to achieve full coverage across the curved profile. Heat was applied to shrink the film tight to the contours of each unit the finished result follows the aerodynamic form closely, producing a clean, taut envelope with no pooling or loose material that could cause abrasion against the composite surfaces below.

The four full fronts, two half fronts, and two quarter fronts were all completed within the agreed one-day window.
The Result
All eight units were wrapped, shrunk, and ready for storage or onward transport by the end of the working day.
The finished wraps are tight, form-following, and visually clean a finished product that reflects the care required when handling high-value finished components. The batch approach, with varying unit sizes handled efficiently within a single visit, demonstrates the scalability of industrial shrink wrap for production and logistics environments beyond the construction sector.
