The Problem
A period house on the Isle of Man needed full weather protection across its scaffold elevations and a temporary pitched roof while significant works continued beneath, including the installation of glazed roof lantern units, the kind of work that cannot tolerate exposure to wind and rain part-way through. Flame retardant film certified to EN13501 was specified across the full 1,721.7m² of roof and side elevations.
Beyond the standard technical requirements for a temporary roof, including minimum 10% pitch, full boarded access, and a handrail around the perimeter, the site itself introduced a logistical constraint most mainland jobs do not have: getting the material and equipment to the Isle of Man at all. Materials had to be shipped as an oversized pallet, and the crew's vehicle required a ferry crossing from Liverpool. None of that is unusual for island work, but it does mean the programme has to account for transport in a way a mainland site does not.

The Solution
Rhino/Versafe 300 micron flame retardant film, certified to EN13501, was specified for both the roof and the side elevations: 957.5m² of roof and 764.2m² of side sheeting, delivered over approximately five days, weather dependent. Materials were shipped to site as a single oversized pallet, with the crew and equipment crossing by ferry from Liverpool, both built into the job as priced, planned elements rather than afterthoughts.
The temporary roof was built to the standard specification: full boarded access, roof boards clipped and secured, and a handrail around the roof edge and perimeter. As with any temporary roof, that specification comes with an honest limit rather than a guarantee. Leaks can occur at protrusions and at the standards passing through the perimeter handrail, and the job was scoped with that understood rather than promised away.
The scaffold itself was required to be flush, fully boarded at each lift and scaff-tagged before shrink wrap installation began, with responsibility for the scaffold's wind loading resting with the client's team.
The Result
Across the roof and side elevations, 1,721.7m² of flame retardant film was specified and supplied for the project, completed within the planned window despite the added logistics of an island site.
The finished roof, drum-tight and fully sealed in the photographs, gave the works beneath, including the roof lantern installation, the weather protection needed to continue regardless of what the Irish Sea was doing outside.
