How a UK Modular Building Manufacturer Protects Hundreds of Modules in Transit

Key Facts

  • Client: Premier Manufacturing Ltd, Shropshire
  • Application: Transport protection for modular buildings
  • Contract: Hundreds of modules for a major London residential development
  • Journey: 150 miles, Shropshire to London
  • Product: Rhino industrial shrink wrap film, applied by Premier's own team

The Problem

Premier Manufacturing, established in 1990, is a leading UK off-site manufacturer of modular buildings and extensions for residential and commercial applications. When a major London contract required hundreds of modules to be transported 150 miles from their Shropshire factory, Premier needed a covering solution that could protect a rendered external finish throughout road transport, and do it consistently, at volume, applied by their own factory operatives.

Their previous solution, heavy-duty reusable covers, had worked adequately for smaller contracts. But reusable covers are difficult to get drum-tight around a module, and a loose cover that flaps at motorway speeds will eventually abrade a rendered surface. Managing dozens of reusable covers across a large contract, including tracking, returning, repairing and cleaning them, also adds significant operational overhead that compounds as the contract scales.

The Solution

Rhino supplied industrial shrink wrap film on large 12m-wide rolls, allowing Premier's own operatives to cover modules directly on the factory floor without specialist shrink wrap experience. The process is straightforward enough to be carried out consistently by factory staff with basic training: unroll and unfold the film over the roof and down the sides of the module, secure it around the base with timber batten, and heat-shrink it drum-tight using a propane gas hot air tool.

Rhino visited the factory to demonstrate the process and ensure Premier's team were confident applying the film before the main contract began. Where access to the module was needed after wrapping, for inspection or last-minute work, zipped access doors could be taped on before or after shrinking.

The drum-tight fit is what makes shrink wrap significantly better than a reusable cover for this application. Once shrunk, the film conforms closely to every surface of the module with no loose material to move in transit. There is nothing to flap, nothing to abrade, and nothing to work loose over a 150-mile motorway journey.

The Result

Modules arrived at London construction sites clean, dry, and with rendered finishes intact, ready for installation without remedial work to damaged surfaces. The single-use film requires no return logistics, no cleaning, no repair programme, and no tracking overhead. On arrival at site it is cut away quickly and sent for recycling. All Rhino shrink wrap is 100% recyclable.

For a large contract where dozens of modules are shipping every week, the operational simplicity of a roll-fed, apply-and-recycle system proved significantly more practical than managing a pool of reusable covers.
