The Problem

Superyacht refit work in Fort Lauderdale, one of the world's busiest yachting hubs, demands a level of encapsulation capability that most scaffolding contractors have not needed on land-based projects. The vessels are large, the hull geometry is complex, and the client expectations are unforgiving. A poorly finished or poorly fitted enclosure on a €30 million yacht is not an option.

Safway, a major North American scaffolding contractor, recognised that their teams needed hands-on training to develop the specialist skills required for marine shrink wrap encapsulation at this level. The practical project was M/Y Meamina, a 59-metre Benetti motor yacht undergoing refit in Fort Lauderdale, which provided both the training environment and a live, full-scale deliverable.

The challenge was not simply the size of the vessel. Encapsulating a superyacht involves navigating curved hull geometry, multiple deck levels, overhanging superstructure sections, and a requirement for a finished enclosure tight enough to create a controlled working environment for refit operations. The margin for error is low and the consequences of a failed seal or an unsupported panel are immediate.

The Solution

Rhino Shrink Wrap delivered an in-person training course for Safway's team in Fort Lauderdale, using the Meamina encapsulation as the live practical component.

Candidates worked through the full encapsulation process from the ground up: framework preparation, sheet positioning, heat application, seam management, and the coordination required when handling full-height panels on multi-level scaffold. The curved sections at the superstructure required particular attention, with trainees working through the technique required to achieve a tight, wrinkle-minimised finish around compound curves at height.

Sheet runs on a vessel of this size require precise team coordination: one or more operatives above managing the sheet from the scaffold deck, others below controlling tension and positioning. That coordination, and the communication it demands, is as much a part of the training as the technical application.

By the completion of the course, the team had encapsulated the full vessel: a continuous white envelope from waterline to superstructure, creating the clean, contained working environment the refit required.

The Result

M/Y Meamina was fully encapsulated to the standard required for refit operations, with the Safway team completing the practical work as part of their training programme.

The enclosure provided weather protection, containment of any refit debris or materials, and the controlled internal environment that specialist marine refit work demands. From the exterior, the finished encapsulation presents as a clean, tight white structure, the standard expected on a vessel of Meamina's calibre.

Safway's candidates left the course with direct, supervised experience on a live superyacht project: the kind of practical competence that classroom instruction cannot replicate. Fort Lauderdale's refit industry operates at the highest end of the marine market. The training was designed to meet that standard directly.
