Starting From Scratch: How Compass Shrink Wrap Launched Their Business With Rhino Training

Key Facts

  • Client: Compass Shrink Wrap
  • Location: Rhino Shrink Wrap Training Centre, Holmes Chapel, Cheshire
  • Scope: In-person scaffold shrink wrap training course plus starter kit
  • Candidates: 2
  • Year: 2021

The Problem

Starting a scaffold shrink wrap business with no prior experience in the trade means one thing: you need to get the application right before you take on your first job. There is no on-the-job tolerance for a wrap that fails, a seam that lifts, or an enclosure that does not perform. Clients expect a finished result, not a learning curve.

That is exactly the position Compass Shrink Wrap found themselves in. Two operatives, a new company, and the ambition to build a business, but no hands-on training and no kit. They came to Rhino Shrink Wrap's training centre in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, to address both in a single visit.

The Solution

Rhino delivered an in-person training course at the Holmes Chapel facility using the dedicated scaffold training structure: a full-scale indoor mock-up built specifically for hands-on technique work, with scaffold erected and ready to sheet.

Candidates covered the full process from setup to finished enclosure: frame preparation, sheet application, heat gun technique, seam welding, fixing tape use, and the installation of an access door. The one-to-one coaching element meant that each candidate received direct correction on technique as they worked: heat distance, gun speed and sheet tension, the details that separate a tight finish from a poor one.

By the end of the course both candidates had completed a full enclosure on the training structure and demonstrated competence across the core skills. They left with their Rhino certification and a complete scaffold shrink wrap starter kit collected on the day: rolls, heat guns, gas, tape, and fixings, everything needed to take on their first live job.

The Result

Compass Shrink Wrap launched their business and have continued to trade successfully since 2021.

They operate as an independent scaffold shrink wrap contractor, taking on encapsulation and sheeting work using the skills and kit acquired through the training. They remain a Rhino Shrink Wrap materials customer, a relationship that began on the day of their course.

The Holmes Chapel training format, with a structured indoor environment, dedicated scaffold mock-up, direct one-to-one coaching, and a starter kit available to collect on the day, is designed precisely for this kind of business launch scenario. Candidates arrive without experience and leave ready to work.
