The Problem

A modular building manufacturer needed a complete unit weatherproofed for a period of external display one full module, 7m long by 4.2m wide with a 4.5m elevation height, standing outside rather than moving straight from factory to installed site. That distinction matters for the specification: a unit in transit needs protection for days, but a unit on external display needs a cover that holds up to sustained UV exposure and weathering for as long as it is standing, without the finish degrading, yellowing or becoming brittle.

The brief also needed to allow for interim access a demonstration or display unit is of limited use if nobody can get inside it once it is wrapped.

The Solution

Rhino 250 micron ST/UV film was specified the UV-stabilised grade rather than a standard specification, chosen specifically because this unit was going to stand and be viewed externally rather than travel under cover. All four elevations, the base and the roof were fully encapsulated, working out at 159.6m² of coverage across the complete unit, giving a continuous, contoured wrap rather than a partial or top-only cover.

An integrated 1.8m pedestrian door was built into the wrap as a specified option a cut, sealed and reinforced access point that lets someone in and out of the unit without cutting or compromising the surrounding membrane. It is a small detail on the spec sheet, but it is the difference between a wrap that has to be partially removed for anyone to view the interior and one that stays fully weathertight while still being usable.

The Result

The completed unit was left fully encapsulated in a UV-stable membrane suited to standing on external display rather than a short transit cover, with an integrated access point that kept the wrap intact while still allowing entry. For manufacturers using shrink wrap on units that will be seen and used while wrapped — display models, demonstration units, show units at events the UV-stabilised specification and a properly integrated access door are the two details that separate a wrap built to last a few days in transit from one built to perform for weeks standing outside.
