The Problem

A request came in to Rhino Shrink Wrap from Orange Aero, a UK-based aviation parts, logistics and MRO specialist that supplies airlines around the world. They needed a Rolls-Royce Trent 700 the engine that powers the Airbus A330 family shrink wrapped for protection at a hangar facility at Copenhagen Airport, Denmark.

A removed aircraft engine is about as high-value and precision-engineered as components get, and protecting one in storage or ahead of transport calls for the same fundamentals as any other shrink wrap application: a clean, contaminant-free, weatherproof envelope that seals out dust, moisture and debris.

The difference is the stakes and the shape. A jet engine's nacelle is a compound-curved, instrumented surface, a long way from the flat panels and box sections shrink wrap is more usually associated with.

The job also needed a local installer. Copenhagen Airport isn't a location Rhino Shrink Wrap covers directly but its partner network does.

The Solution

Rather than turn the enquiry away, Rhino put its supply network to work. Rhino has an established relationship with Kemp Industries AB, a Swedish shrink wrap installation specialist covering the Nordic region well placed to attend Copenhagen Airport at short notice.

Rhino passed the enquiry to Kemp Industries and supplied the film for the job. The engine in the photo above is wrapped in Rhino Shrink Wrap 250 micron standard grade film, the same general-purpose grade Rhino supplies for industrial component protection applications across the UK and Europe.

At 250 micron, the film is light and conformable enough to follow the engine's curved nacelle profile closely while still providing a robust, durable barrier.

Kemp Industries wrapped the engine on its transport cradle and heat-shrunk the film tight across the full profile, producing the clean, contoured envelope shown fully sealed, with no loose material or pooling to catch on handling equipment.

The Result

Everyone involved came out ahead. Orange Aero got their engine protected quickly by a capable, locally based installer. Kemp Industries gained a new job and a new customer relationship in the aviation sector and a fresh supply of Rhino Shrink Wrap film to do it with.

And Rhino sold the materials that made the whole thing possible without needing to put a UK crew on a ferry to Denmark.

It's a small job, but it's a good illustration of how Rhino's network operates in practice.
