Most shrink wrap suppliers will tell you that any propane gas heat gun will do the job. In a controlled demonstration on a calm day, that might even be true.

In real working conditions — moving between sites, operating in all weathers, shrinking hundreds of square metres a day across scaffolding, industrial products, modular buildings, or marine covers — the differences between heat guns become very apparent, very quickly.

At Rhino we run our own installation teams, which means we use these tools across a wide range of applications day in and day out. This guide is based on that experience. It covers the decisions that matter when choosing a shrink wrap heat gun, and the ones that are easy to get wrong.

Construction and Industrial Use Is Not Pallet Wrapping

Most propane gas heat guns on the market were originally developed for shrink wrapping pallets in warehouses. They work well for that application — used indoors, at a fixed location, for short periods of time, on lightweight film.

Shrinking large format film across construction, industrial, modular building, and marine applications is a fundamentally different proposition. The same tool needs to:

  • Be transported between sites repeatedly, loaded and unloaded from vans
  • Operate reliably in all weather conditions including cold, damp, and wind
  • Run for extended periods — an operative might shrink 200 or more square metres in a day across a scaffold encapsulation or large industrial cover
  • Handle thicker, more demanding grades of film than those used for pallet wrapping

A heat gun that performs adequately in a warehouse environment may prove unreliable under these conditions. Real world performance across a range of applications and conditions is the only meaningful test — specification sheets alone will not tell you what you need to know.

Gas vs Electric — Is There Really a Choice?

Electric heat guns are occasionally suggested as an alternative to propane gas tools, particularly on sites with restrictions on hot works or gas equipment.

In practice, electric tools are not a realistic option for large scale shrink wrapping of any kind. The most capable electric heat gun on the market — the Leister Forte S3 — produces around 10kW of output. A propane gas gun typically produces between 30kW and 70kW. That power gap translates directly into speed. What a gas gun covers in a day would take an electric tool several days to match.

There are additional practical problems. The Forte S3 requires a three-phase power supply, which is rarely available at the working area on a construction site, a boatyard, or a modular building factory. The tool weighs approximately four times as much as a comparable gas gun. The cost is significantly higher.

For anything beyond very small scale or specialist applications, gas is the only practical choice.

The exception worth noting is where a site genuinely prohibits hot works of any kind — certain live industrial facilities and refineries, for example. In those cases, alternative methods exist but they are slower, more expensive per square metre, and outside the scope of this guide. Dead Man's Handle — Non-Negotiable

Heat guns fall into two categories: continuous operation and dead man's handle.

A continuous operation tool stays lit once ignited until the operator manually turns it off. If the tool is dropped or left unattended on a scaffold, in a boatyard, or on a factory floor, it continues to burn. This is an unacceptable risk in any professional working environment.

A dead man's handle tool requires the operator to maintain constant pressure on the trigger to keep the gun operating. Release the trigger — whether deliberately or because the tool has been dropped — and the gas supply cuts off immediately. There is no residual flame.

Rhino recommends only gas powered heat guns with a dead man's handle and full piezo ignition. Piezo ignition means the gas ignites automatically when the trigger is pressed — there is no pilot light or continuously burning flame required. Some cheaper tools, including roofing torches occasionally used for shrink wrapping, require a pilot light that burns continuously, which creates a hazard whenever the tool is not in active use.

Whichever tool you choose, always obtain a hot works permit if required by the site, and ensure fire extinguishers are located nearby before beginning work.

Power — How Much Is Enough?

It is tempting to assume that the most powerful tool on the market will always be the best choice. In practice, once a heat gun reaches sufficient output for large format shrink wrapping — broadly around 40kW — the real world difference between a 60kW and a 70kW gun is marginal. Back to back tests comparing tools of different outputs show only a few minutes difference over an area of several hundred square metres.

What higher power does guarantee is higher gas consumption. The most powerful guns use close to twice the gas of lower powered models. This means more cylinders to source, transport, and manage — and a higher risk of cylinders icing and losing pressure during extended use. A 13kg propane cylinder is the most practical size for most applications.

One application where output does make a more noticeable difference is large marine covers — shrinking a 200 micron film over a significant boat hull or superyacht requires sustained heat across a large area, and a more powerful gun will maintain pace better over those distances. For scaffold encapsulation and modular building covers using 300 micron film, the difference is less marked.

All heat guns in the Rhino range have sufficient power for the applications we supply film for. Power output is not the primary differentiator between tools.

Reliability and Spare Parts — the Factor Most Buyers Overlook

Based on years of running our own installation teams across scaffolding, industrial, and marine projects, the single most important factor when choosing a heat gun for heavy duty use is not power, not weight, and not price. It is reliability.

A heat gun that fails mid-job — whether through a faulty ignitor, a worn electrode, or a deteriorating hose — costs far more than the price difference between tools. It stops productive work, may require a return visit, and can damage your reputation with clients working to tight programmes.

Even the most reliable tools have components that wear out with heavy use. Before committing to a heat gun, check the following with your supplier:

  • Does the supplier carry spare parts for the tools they sell? The most commonly replaced components are the piezo ignitor, the electrode, and the hose.
  • Are spare parts reasonably priced? Spare part costs for some shrink wrap guns can be disproportionate to the tool's purchase price.
  • Does the supplier have working knowledge of the tool? A supplier who has used the tool in the field will be able to advise on maintenance and diagnose problems quickly.

Hose Length, Case, and Accessories

A few practical details that are easy to overlook when comparing tools on output and price:

Hose length. Choose a heat gun supplied with a 10 metre hose rather than 8 metres. The extra length makes a meaningful difference when moving around any large installation, reducing the need to reposition the gas cylinder as frequently.

Hard carry case. A heat gun transported loose in the back of a van will sustain damage over time. Choose a tool supplied with a hard plastic carry case. This protects the gun between sites and keeps the regulator, hose, and tool together as a complete kit ready to use.

Welding gloves. Leather welding gauntlets are essential for heat welding shrink wrap. The film reaches high temperatures during the weld process and the installer needs to press the join together by hand.

Extensions. Heat gun extensions allow the operator to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible without repositioning. Extensions are particularly useful for large marine covers and large industrial covers.

Number of guns. A single heat gun is sufficient to get started and handle smaller jobs. For commercial scale work across any application, two guns working simultaneously is significantly more efficient and should be considered the practical minimum for a professional installation capability.

Choosing the Right Gun for Your Application

The core requirements — gas powered, dead man's handle, piezo ignition, reliable with available spare parts — apply across all applications. Beyond that:

For scaffold encapsulation and modular building covers using 300 micron flame retardant film, any gun in the 40-70kW range with good reliability credentials will perform well. Weight becomes important over a long day's work — a lighter gun is less fatiguing to hold for extended periods.

For industrial covering and large storage or transport wraps using 200-250 micron film, the same criteria apply. Jobs are often more varied in shape and size, so a gun with a wider heat pattern can be useful for shrinking around irregular profiles.

For marine applications using 180-200 micron boat shrink wrap, a gun with an available extension is worth considering for larger vessels. Output requirements are similar but the geometry of a boat hull — particularly bows and sterns — can be harder to reach than a flat scaffold facade.

In all cases, the ability to source spare parts and get reliable support from your supplier matters more than specification differences between tools of similar output.

Summary — What to Prioritise

When choosing a shrink wrap heat gun:

  1. Gas, not electric. For any meaningful scale of work there is no realistic alternative.
  2. Dead man's handle with piezo ignition. Non-negotiable for safe site use across any application.
  3. Sufficient power — around 40kW or above. Beyond that, reliability matters more than output figures.
  4. Spare parts availability. Check before you buy. A tool your supplier cannot service will let you down.
  5. 10 metre hose and hard carry case as standard. Practical necessities, not optional extras.
  6. Two guns for commercial work. One to get started; two for efficient day-to-day installation at any meaningful scale.
